40th Reunion Highlights
"The Humdinger"
September 10-12, 2004
Thursday Evening, September 9th:
Classmates gathered
for dinner at ol' Supthens BBQ and then returned to the Best Western for
visiting.
Friday, September 10th
7:30 am - Golf at Huber Country Club. We had about 12
players show up for early Friday morning golf (and 1 beer cart driver).
It was a great start to the long weekend.
Noon to 1:30pm - Refreshments were served at the home of
Joyce Griffin Trigg.
1:30 to 2:30 pm - Pep Rally at Borger High School. It was quite
warm in the gym, we were recognized (actually we were rather obvious) and quite
possibly cheered the loudest.
2:30 to 5:30 pm - Girl Scout Little House.
Pre-registration, pick up name tags, memory book, visiting, etc. and waiting
around for the game.
6:15 to 6:30 pm - Boarded busses for football game in Dumas.
7:30 pm - Attended the football game in Dumas. Well, Borger
lost the game, but the bus ride was a real hoot that was enjoyed by
all. Following the game, we returned to Borger for a surprise
event staged by our Borger resident classmates. They recreated the parking
lot of the Post drive-in, on the same location, and were serving cherry and
lime cokes. What a treat! Cars pulling in, driving past, honking horns,
everyone just milling about and visiting with each other. If you closed
your eyes, you could just imagine yourself back at the Post!
Saturday, September 11th
7:30 am - Golf at Phillips Golf Course. Another 12 players showed
up for Saturday golf.
9:00 am - Spudnuts and visiting at the Best Western - Breakfast
Room. Spudnuts and good friends - what more could you want?
10:00 to 11:00 am - Tour of Borger High School followed by
brunch in the school cafeteria, and more registrations.
12:45 pm - Group photo in front of school (another very warm day)
1:30 pm - The period movie at the Morley was Dr.
Strangelove, and was enjoyed by all.
6:00 pm - Elk's Lodge (BPOE) was open for evening
activities and dinner was served shortly afterward.
7:30 pm - Welcome remarks by Danny and memorial by Roger Loyd and
Mark Dill.
7:45 pm until 2:00 am - What a great party! We
had more than 250 classmates and guests who laughed, cried and danced the
night away. It was a miracle of old friends reuniting, and new friends meeting.
The night was full of song, great talk, and the marvelous spirit of
friendship. Some of us even danced for the first time, with partners we had
been too shy to ask in high school.
Sunday, September 12th
7:30 am - Golf at Huber Country Club. We had 3 who were
able to make it for early morning golf.
9:00 to 10:30 am - Breakfast/brunch was served at Girl
Scout Little House. What a wonderful time we shared, with new and old
memories.
10:30 to 11:30 am - Attend church services as group at First
Christian Church
11:30 am - Girl Scout Little House for snacks and visiting
before returning to our homes. Nobody was ready for the reunion to
stop. If we just had a nice nap we could have continued for another three
days and still not had enough of the good times.
Comments from Classmates
Judy Hays - "I thoroughly enjoyed the reunion. I met people
that I thought would never remember me.. A few remembered me that I did
not remember. People seemed more down to earth and were friendly to
everyone. I enjoyed all the activities. I thank the
committee so much for putting on this reunion. enjoyed
being a part of a wonderful and memorable occasion. I am looking
forward to the next reunion."
Donna Cleveland - "What a great reunion we had!! I've been on a "happy
high" ever since! I hope to see you and many other classmates again
before too long."
Ed Stevens - "As Frances and I drove toward home Sunday afternoon many
thoughts raced through my head about the reunion, those who attended and those
who hadn't. I was determined to write them down and send them along to each of
you. When I arrived home there were so many things that had churned through my
mind that it was difficult to distill into a few paragraphs. As I arrived at
work Tuesday morning and began to read my email I realized that almost everyone
who had written in shared practically the same feelings about the "HUMDINGER".
Let me just say that it was wonderful to see everyone. To those of you who were
unable to attend, you were missed! I hope that you and everyone else will be
able to attend the "HUMDINGER II" in a few short years. To all of those
who worked so hard to make this event a successful happening, and to all who
attended let me just say, as in the recent TV commercial, THANK YOU!!
Just THANK YOU!!!!!!"
Vera Jo Aull - "Thank you is so lame. I saw the smiles and the
tears that can't be recorded."
Patsy Weddington Carlson Whurl - "I'm still on "cloud nine" from my
experiences of last weekend. My son Brian and I had a blast. I
got to see some old friends, some of whom I hadn't seen since about 1964. I
also made some new friends and enjoyed getting acquainted with people I didn't
know very well in high school. The 13-hour trip back to Illinois went very
"quickly": while Brian did most of the driving, I read the entire contents of
the 3-ring binder from cover to cover. It was interesting, humorous and quite
impressive (we're a well-educated bunch, and many of us have
overcome difficulties in life)."
Talhia Anderson - "A wonderful weekend. It was so nice to see
everyone who was there and great to visit with all of them. I also want
to thank all of my classmates for making my son and daughter-in-law feel so
welcome. They had a great time and enjoyed watching all of us have so
much fun. I wish everyone could have been there to enjoy the experience.
Those who weren't really missed out on a wonderful weekend."
Larry Luttrell - "The reunion was awesome. You guys did a fantastic
job. Jan and I had the most wonderful time. Glad we got to come,
even if it was just in and out. Bill & Marsha were terrific and took
wonderful care of us. So nice to see so many friends after so long."
Sandra Green Harlan - "Thank you and everyone that worked to get us
all there for the reunion. I had no idea how much it would mean to see
friends that I had not seen in soooo many years."
Neva Routon Fliger - "The reunion was wonderful. We had
such a good turn out and I was so surprised and had a wonderful time. IT
WAS GREAT!!!!!"
Bob Davis - "Thanks a million for all the time and many hours of effort
to put it together - it was great. I had a wonderful time as I think
everyone did. It was without a doubt the best reunion ever. Thanks
again to all that worked so hard to make it happen."
Cecil Biggers - "You all did a great job!"
Bob Foland - "I had the time of my life, seeing all my old friends and meeting
old friends for the first time. I had conversations with people that I
barely knew in high school and really enjoyed myself. All in all it was a
joyous meeting."
Harold Lowery - "I just needed to say THANKS, to all the committee for
all that was done to make the reunion such a wonderful success. It was so
great to see everyone, people that shared a very remarkable time in our
lives, how we have all changed, how we have all grown as human
beings. Words can not express all the emotion I have felt over the past
week, as I look back. once again THANKS to each and every one
of you, for all that you GAVE, and in every way that you gave."
Jerry Lee - "Thanks so much for encouraging me to make it to the
reunion. I really had a good time. Plus, to those that did not
attend because of some pre-conceived notions: you really messed up.
Everyone that attended, went home with some new joy in their hearts from seeing
old friends from long ago. I can't wait to see the pictures of the "6th
street, east of the railroad tracks" gang that we took Saturday night.
And thank you to the lovely ladies that put up with me on the dance floor."
Sandra Wilson - "The reunion couldn't have
been better. I didn't know what I had been missing all these years---all
my childhood friends."
Cecil Chisum - "Just wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed the
reunion and the get together. Just wish it could have lasted
longer. Dee had a really good time meeting all of my
classmates. We will miss seeing you and a lot of the other
guys."
Julie Brummal - "It has been a week since the "Humdinger" and we have
spent most of that time talking about how great it was and how much fun it was
revisiting all those high school memories. My husband keeps talking about
how he had forgotten what it was like to ride a school bus to a Friday night
football game in Texas. I read my memory book from cover to cover several
times as we were driving back to Phoenix. I have so many fond memories
from the reunion that I will cherish for the rest of my life."
